Let us be honest. Most of us are pretty good at keeping up with the everyday washing. Clothes go in, clothes come out, they get folded and put away. But bedding? That is a different story entirely. Doonas get shoved to the bottom of the list because they are bulky, awkward, and half the time they do not even fit in the machine at home.
Quick Answer
Professional bedding and linen washing costs $5.50 per kilogram at Fresh Folds. Our commercial machines handle king-size doonas, quilts, and bulky items that will not fit in a home washer, with thorough drying to prevent moisture retention.
If you have ever tried to wash a king-size doona in a standard household washing machine, you know exactly what we mean. It either does not fit, does not spin properly, or comes out still dirty in the middle. Then you have got a soaking wet doona that takes two days to dry on the line, assuming it does not rain in the meantime. Welcome to Queensland.
Fresh Folds offers a dedicated bedding and linen washing service across Logan, Ipswich and Brisbane South. We handle everything from your weekly sheets through to heavy doonas, quilts and mattress protectors, using commercial-grade machines that are built for oversized items.
Why Bedding and Linen Needs Different Treatment
Your everyday clothes are relatively straightforward to wash. They are small, they agitate well in a standard machine, and they dry quickly on the line or in a dryer. Bedding and linen items are a completely different beast.
Size and Weight
A king-size doona can weigh anywhere from 3 to 6 kilograms dry. Once it absorbs water, that weight doubles or triples. Most household machines have a capacity of 7 to 10 kilograms, which means a single doona maxes out the machine. There is no room for it to move around properly, so it does not actually get clean. The detergent cannot circulate, the water cannot flush through evenly, and you end up with a doona that smells slightly better but is not truly washed.
Drying Challenges
Even if you manage to wash a doona at home, drying it properly is the real challenge. A wet doona hung on a standard clothesline sags in the middle, trapping moisture. If it does not dry thoroughly within a reasonable time, you risk mildew and mould developing inside the filling. This is especially common in the warmer, more humid months in South East Queensland. That musty smell some people notice in their bedding is often the result of incomplete drying.
Special Care Requirements
Different bedding items have different care needs. Down-filled doonas require gentle handling and specific drying temperatures. Wool quilts can shrink if washed too aggressively. Mattress protectors with waterproof membranes can lose their effectiveness if exposed to high heat. Getting the settings wrong does not just mean a bad wash, it can damage the item permanently.
How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer depends on the item. Here is a practical guide based on what we recommend to our customers.
Sheets and Pillowcases: Every Week
Your sheets and pillowcases are in direct contact with your skin for roughly eight hours every night. They absorb sweat, body oils, dead skin cells and dust. Washing them weekly is the standard recommendation, and it makes a genuine difference to how fresh your bed feels and how well you sleep. If you want to read more about washing frequency for different items, we have a detailed guide on how often to wash sheets, towels and clothes.
Doona Covers: Every Two to Four Weeks
Your doona cover acts as a barrier between you and the doona itself, so it does not need washing as frequently as sheets. Every two to four weeks is a good rhythm, depending on the season and whether you tend to run warm at night.
Doonas and Quilts: Every Two to Three Months
If you use a doona cover consistently, the doona itself can go a bit longer between washes. Every two to three months is reasonable. However, if you sleep without a cover or if anyone in the house has allergies, monthly is better.
Pillows: Every Three to Four Months
Pillows are often forgotten entirely, but they accumulate dust mites, sweat and oils over time. A good wash every three to four months keeps them hygienic and helps them hold their shape.
Mattress Protectors: Monthly
Your mattress protector catches everything that gets through the sheet. Monthly washing keeps it doing its job properly and extends the life of your mattress.
Seasonal Deep Wash
At the start of winter and summer, it is worth doing a thorough wash of all your bedding. Swap out the lighter summer doona for the heavier winter one, wash whatever is going into storage, and start the new season with everything fresh. This is a perfect time to send the lot to us and get it all done in one go.
How Fresh Folds Handles Oversized Bedding
The reason professional bedding washing works so much better than doing it at home comes down to equipment and process.
Commercial-Grade Machines
Our commercial washing machines have a much larger drum capacity than household machines. A king-size doona fits comfortably with plenty of room to move, which means the water and detergent can circulate properly through every part of the filling. The result is an actually thorough clean, not just a surface wash.
Proper Drying
This is where the real difference shows. Our commercial dryers can handle bulky items at controlled temperatures, ensuring the filling dries evenly all the way through. No damp spots, no trapped moisture, no risk of mildew. For items that need lower heat, we adjust the settings accordingly. The goal is always to return your bedding completely dry, fresh and ready to go straight back on the bed.
Eco-Friendly Detergents
We use eco-conscious detergents that are effective on bedding but gentle on sensitive skin. This matters especially for bedding, since these are the items you press your face into every night. Harsh chemicals have no place on your pillowcase.
What Can You Send Us?
People are sometimes surprised by the range of bedding and linen items we handle. Here is a list of the most common things our customers send through:
- Flat sheets and fitted sheets (single through to king)
- Pillowcases
- Doona covers / quilt covers
- Doonas (including king-size and thick winter doonas)
- Quilts (cotton, polyester, wool and down-filled)
- Pillows
- Mattress protectors (including waterproof ones)
- Cushion covers and throw pillow covers
- Blankets and throws
- Table cloths and table runners
- Cloth napkins
If you are not sure whether we can handle a particular item, just ask. We will let you know. Our bedding and linen service covers the vast majority of household linen items.
Pricing for Bedding and Linen
Our bedding and linen washing is priced at $5.50 per kilogram, the same rate as our standard wash and fold service. We weigh your items when we collect them, so you only pay for what you send.
To give you a rough idea of what different items weigh:
- A set of king-size sheets (flat, fitted and two pillowcases): roughly 2 to 2.5 kg
- A king-size doona cover: about 1.5 to 2 kg
- A standard polyester-fill king doona: around 3 to 4 kg
- A thick winter doona: 4 to 6 kg
- A standard pillow: about 0.8 to 1.2 kg
- A mattress protector: roughly 1 to 1.5 kg
So a full bedding wash for a king bed, including sheets, doona cover, doona and two pillows, would come in at roughly 9 to 12 kilograms, or about $49.50 to $66 plus the $12.50 pick up and delivery fee. You can check our full pricing page for all service rates. Our minimum order is $60.
Allergies and Sensitive Skin
Bedding is one of the biggest sources of allergen exposure in the home. Dust mites thrive in mattresses, pillows and doonas, feeding on the dead skin cells that accumulate over time. For people with asthma, eczema, hay fever or general dust sensitivity, keeping bedding properly clean is not just about comfort. It is a health issue.
Regular professional washing removes dust mites, their waste products, and the accumulated allergens that build up between washes. Our commercial machines wash at temperatures that are effective against dust mites, and thorough drying ensures there is no residual moisture for mould spores to latch onto.
If anyone in your household has known sensitivities, let us know when you book. We can make sure we use the most appropriate detergent and settings for your needs.
How to Prepare Your Bedding for Pickup
Getting your bedding ready for collection is straightforward. Here are a few tips to make the process smooth:
- Strip everything off the bed. Remove sheets, pillowcases, doona covers, mattress protectors, the lot.
- Separate the doona from its cover. We wash these differently, so it helps to have them apart when we collect.
- Bag it up. Use any large bags you have. Old shopping bags, garbage bags, laundry bags, whatever works. We are not fussy about packaging.
- Note any stains or special instructions. If there is a particular stain you want us to focus on, or if an item needs gentle treatment, just pop a note in the bag or send us a text.
- Leave it at the agreed collection spot. Front door, side gate, wherever we have arranged. You do not need to be home.
We will weigh everything, wash and dry it all, fold it neatly and return it to you, typically within 48 hours.
More Than Just Sheets
A lot of people start with us just for their regular weekly laundry and then realise we can handle the bedding too. It makes sense to combine everything. Send your clothes through our wash and fold service, your work shirts through wash and iron, and your bedding through the linen service, all in the same pickup. One collection, one delivery, everything sorted.
It is particularly handy when you have guests coming to stay. Strip the spare room bed, send everything to us, and have it back fresh and clean before your visitors arrive. No more panic-washing sheets at 10pm the night before. If you manage an Airbnb or holiday rental, our guide for short-term rental hosts covers how to keep guest linen consistently fresh.
